Milk Away in Seville, Spain – Favorite Finds
Before moving to Spain, the Spanish cuisine was one that I was less familiar with than the typical American family cuisines of Mexican or Italian. I didn’t know what Salmorejo was or Tortillas de Patatas, two very famous dishes here in Seville found at most Spanish restaurants that I have now grown to love. But even with the new-found love that I have gained for Spanish food, every once in a while it is nice to have a little break and eat something different to keep my taste buds on their toes.
I have always been a sucker for healthy food. There is something about making healthy food delicious that is intriguing to me. It is a challenge, but I love it. How can I turn this eggplant and zucchini into something ultra delicious that my husband will actually like and ask for seconds of? When I lived in Hawaii on the island of Oahu, I fell head over heels for their local healthy treat – the acai bowl. I would of eaten one every day if I could of. One of my roommates grew up in Oahu on the southern part of the island, and she introduced them to me in our little apartment. So fresh and so good. I was a member of my university’s triathlon club and we sold them at a food festival to raise money. We thought we had plenty of ingredients to last us making them through the whole night, more than enough even. We were very wrong. We sold out in less than two hours. They are that good.
Don’t Know What an Acai Bowl Is?
Let’s first talk about the most important part, the acai berry.
An acai berry is one of the most nutritious berries on the planet with mega benefits to your heart, skin, digestion, and cells, among other things. It also has anti-aging effects. If that's true, well then, bring on the berries! It comes from the Amazon rainforest and is a dark blue-ish purple color. Some people refer to it as the Amazonian palm berry.
The berries are blended with ice, frozen bananas, frozen strawberries, and a small amount of liquid of your choice until it is well mixed and super thick. It needs to very thick, much thicker than an average smoothie, because you eat it with a spoon. You pour the blended mix into a bowl and then top it with your favorite toppings – bananas, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, kiwis, chia seeds, granola, honey, peanut butter, almond butter, flax seed, pumpkin seeds, hemp hearts, whatever healthy toppings your heart desires.
They are healthy, fresh, cold and extremely delicious. You’ll find my acai bowls topped with homemade granola, a scoop of roasted almond butter, and freshly sliced bananas and strawberries. Don’t forget that little drizzle of local honey over the top. That’s a must. During my time in Hawaii, you could often find me lounging on a beach somewhere with an acai bowl in hand, soaking in the sun while listening to the crashing sound of the waves hitting the rocks. So dreamy. Please, take me back. Hawaii has an extra special place in my heart not only because of the acai bowls and beaches, but it is where I met and dated my husband, Nate. Such good memories.
Here in Seville, I have found my little piece of Hawaii near Plaza de la Alfalfa called, Milk Away.
It is run by two girls who do everything, make the food, take the orders, etc, so don’t expect the service to be super quick. It’s a place that you take your time and enjoy yourself a bit. They make everything fresh right there in front of you – smoothies, fresh juices, salads, toasts, and acai bowls. It is a meal that you eat and feel great about afterwards knowing that you fueled your body with healthy ingredients. While healthy, it's also delicious, so it's a win win. It’s hard to find a place that makes food healthy AND delicious at the same time, but Milk Away has it down to a tee.
The two girls who work there are super friendly and happy to help you choose what to order if you have questions. They also speak perfect English. I love the setting of this place. They have a cute little mural of a tree in the corner of the shop that Jimmy and I love sitting by. It's a place that feels welcome, with a bit of the spirit of Aloha in the air.
I hope you enjoy Milk Away as much as I do....well, we do! Jimmy loves it too and is a huge fan. Let me know in the comments what you think!
